Identity of San Rafael Resident Struck By Fallen Tree Released

On 10/21/2016, an elderly male was in the back yard of his residence in San Rafael, located at 99 Deer Park Ave., when he was struck by a fallen section of a eucalyptus tree while reportedly watering foliage.  Firefighters and Paramedics with the San Rafael Fire Department responded to the residence and found the subject pinned beneath the fallen section of the tree and initiated extrication efforts.  The subject's death was pronounced on scene at 1539 hours.

Coroner Division personnel with the Marin County Sheriff's Office identified the decedent as David Taylor Lumbard, a 77-year-old male.

Early statements obtained by coroner investigators suggest the fallen tree reportedly started leaning toward the subject's residence over the past few months.  The cause of the fallen branch has not been pinpointed at this time.  There have been no reports of recent maintenance or trimming of the tree.

The cause and manner of death are pending the conclusion of a forensic examination, which has been scheduled for early next week.  The Coroner Division will release no further information at this time, as this in an active investigation.
