Peaceful Resolution to Police Activity- Tennessee Valley Rd

Mental Health Crisis Averted on Tennessee Valley Rd

On 4/8/2024, a call came in to the Marin County Sheriff's Office Communications Center of a subject who was suffering from a mental health crisis, and was believed to be armed with a firearm. A search of the surrounding area, coupled with cellular activity from the subject, helped pinpoint his exact location and he was contacted by US Park Police and Marin County Sheriff's Deputies. The subject was ultimately located at the end of Tennessee Valley Rd in his vehicle.

As Deputies on scene began to communicate with the driver, he confirmed he had a firearm in his possession and he did not want to cooperate with law enforcement, and was willing to shoot at deputies before taking his life if he felt threatened. MCSO Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) and the Special Response Team (SRT)  were called in to peacefully resolve the incident. The subject admitted to be suffering from a mental health crisis and was in need of working with specialists, although he was not willing to leave his firearm to cooperate with law enforcement to safely go to the hospital for treatment.

After approximately 8.5 hours of negotiations, the subject was finally willing to put down the weapon and be transported to a mental health facility for treatment, without further incident. No one was hurt or injured throughout this nearly 10 hour ordeal.

We want to thank our law enforcement partners with the US Park Police for their assistance and are grateful for the peaceful resolution and that the subject was willing to seek mental health treatment.
