The San Rafael Police Department is investigating the in-custody death of an incarcerated person, housed at the Marin County Jail.

 

Around 12:00pm on August 10, 2023 a Deputy performing a routine check of incarcerated persons within their jail cells found a subject hanging within their cell, which was jointly occupied by another subject.

 

The San Rafael Fire Department was requested to respond to the Jail. The subject was transported to the hospital for life saving measures but was ultimately pronounced deceased on August 13th, 2023.

 

The Sheriff’s Office requested the San Rafael Police Department respond to conduct an independent investigation into the death of the incarcerated person. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Coroners Division responded to handle the Coroner duties associated with the death. A post mortem examination is scheduled for later this week.

 

No further information will be released from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and any media inquiries related to the independent investigation should be directed to Sgt J.
