On Saturday April 01, 2023, at approximately 1:05 PM it was reported to 9-1-1 a motor vehicle collision occurred in the 5400 block of Shoreline Highway in West Marin, near the intersection of Fairfax-Bolinas Road, Bolinas.  Reportedly a 2009 Yamaha FZ1 motorcycle being operated southbound on Highway 1 by the decedent collided with a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, which had been travelling northbound and turned left crossing into the motorcyclist’s path.   The motorcyclist was unable to yield prior to striking the passenger side of the Subaru vehicle, and was ejected from his bike, regrettably sustaining multiple traumatic injuries.  First Responders were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival located the subject unconscious, unresponsive in cardiopulmonary arrest. Despite paramedics providing resuscitative aid, the subject failed to respond to treatment and his death was pronounced on the scene.  The driver of the Subaru vehicle was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

A secondary collision involving another motorcyclist riding in a group with the subject within the same area occurred simultaneously after striking debris from the original incident.  This subject was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained because of this collision.

The decedent has been positively identified as:

Richard Paul COYSTON, a 60-year-old male from Forestville, CA.

A forensic postmortem examination with toxicology testing is being completed later this week.  The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations being completed by the California Highway Patrol – Marin Division and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office - Coroner Division.  No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation.  Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the California Highway Patrol – Marin Division.
