In Custody Death- Update from Oct 1, 2023 Incident

On October 1, 2023, an incarcerated person, who was in custody at the Marin County Jail was discovered by Deputies to be in need of emergency medical attention. Ultimately, the subject was pronounced deceased, and two separate law enforcement agencies were requested to conduct an independent investigation in to the cause and manner of death. The Novato Police Department conducted the investigation in to the manner of death, and looked to determine if all legally required measures were completed by the Custody Deputies and Staff during the incarceration period. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, Coroner's Division was contacted to investigate the death and determine the cause of death. 


At the conclusion of the medical examination, and the separate law enforcement investigation, the cause of death was determined to be hanging. The manner of death, was identified as suicide, which is consistent with the circumstances of the investigation and the cause of death.
