RESIDENT PREFERENTIAL PARKING PERMITS

The Marin County Board of Supervisors has designated certain areas of Kentfield and San Quentin Village as “residential preferential parking zones.” These areas are posted with time restrictions from 40 minutes to 2 hours for vehicles without a residential parking permit.  Residents who live on streets that are designated as a resident preferential parking zone may apply for a Resident Preferential Parking Permit that will allow them to park in excess of the posted time limit.

RESIDENT PREFERENTIAL PERMIT APPLICATION

Residents may apply for and be issued up to two permits per household, no exceptions.  To be eligible for a permit, the vehicle must meet the following requirement.

  • Registered to a qualifying residential address in Kentfield or San Quentin Village
  • Currently registered with the DMV
  • No outstanding parking or toll violations on your registration

If your vehicle meets the above criteria, please complete a Resident Preferential Parking Permit Application.  Applications may be submitted by US Mail, or by emailing the completed application to parkingenforcement@marinsheriff.org.  Incomplete applications, including applications without a signature, will not be processed.

If your vehicle does not meet the eligibility requirements, you will receive a letter advising you why the application was declined.  You must be a resident on one of the permitted streets in order to obtain a resident preferential parking permit – college students and residents of streets/addresses other than those listed above will not be issued permits.

**PLEASE NOTE:  Vehicles must be registered to a physical address.  The DMV will allow for a vehicle to be registered with both a mailing (PO Box) and a physical address.  Vehicles that are registered to a PO Box only will not be eligible for a permit.

You are responsible for reading and completing the permit application. By signing the permit application, you affirm that you have read and understand the policies and procedures, and shall comply with them. There is currently no cost for parking permits, however, that is subject to change. It is your responsibility to report any lost or stolen permits, and to obtain a new permit as necessary.

Permits are static cling decals that should be placed on the inside of either the lower left corner of the front windshield (above the VIN), or in the lower left corner of the rear window. Do not place the permit in the rear window if your vehicle has tinted windows – if the permit is not visible, it cannot be honored.

Permits are issued to specific vehicles and may not be used on any other vehicle. If a permit is found on a vehicle other than that to which it was assigned, the permit will be immediately and permanently voided. Vehicles found with false or unassigned permits will be issued citations for overtime.

NEW VEHICLES: Do not switch a permit to a new vehicle before notifying Kentfield parking enforcement. After ensuring your new vehicle meets the eligibility requirements, we will need the vehicle’s make, model, color, and license plate in order to update our records.
Resident Preferential Parking Permits holders are only allowed to park over the posted time limit in specific areas. The letter on your parking permit (A, Q, or W) allows you to park over the time limit on streets posted with matching area signs. Permits do not allow the holder to park in violation of any county ordinance or state vehicle code. Vehicles may park for a maximum of 72 hours per Marin County Code 15.36.030 and California Vehicle Code 22651(k) before they must be moved. Vehicles in violation of this code are subject to citation and/or tow regardless of permitted status. This ordinance is enforced even if the vehicle is parked in front of the owner’s residence.

Residential Permits are NOT valid on the College campus

COLLEGE PARKING PERMITS OF ANY TYPE ARE NOT VALID ON THE STREETS ADJACENT TO THE CAMPUS – THEY ARE ONLY VALID ON CAMPUS LOTS. CITATIONS WILL BE ISSUED TO VEHICLES PARKED IN EXCESS OF POSTED TIME LIMITS EVEN IF THEY ARE DISPLAYING A VALID CAMPUS PERMIT.
In an effort to provide our residents with a more efficient permit process, vehicles may be eligible for automatic renewal if they meet the requirements (current registration, registered to a qualifying address, and with no parking or toll violations on file). If your vehicle is determined to be ineligible for automatic renewal, you will receive a letter of explanation and are encouraged to reapply when the issue has been corrected. You may receive automatic renewal a maximum of five times before you will need to reapply.

Automatic Renewal permits are mailed out beginning in November – December. As this is a busy time of year for many residents, we recommend placing the new permit in your vehicle immediately to avoid misplacing or forgetting it – your new permit is valid once it has been properly affixed to your vehicle. If you have not received your permit or a letter of explanation by the beginning of January, please contact Kentfield parking enforcement so we can assist you.
