Bolinas Beach Fatality Recovery Identity Released

After remains were recovered from a rocky surf line along Bolinas, the decedent was identified as Shawn Steven Hurlock, a 52-year-old male out of Stockton, CA.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At about 0929 hours, 01/13/2016, the Coroner Division of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office was notified that the remains of a deceased adult male were recovered from a rocky surf line along Bolinas beach, about 1⁄4 west of Brighton Ave. The decedent’s identification was unknown at the onset of the investigation. No personal property or identification was found on the subject’s remains. Two of his shirts had markings from different organizations in Stockton, CA. Coroner personnel contacted these organizations and found no potential matches to employees or customers.

Due to the decedent’s extended exposure to ocean waters, fingerprinting was difficult and useable prints for identification purposes were initially unobtainable. Over the following weeks the Coroner Division worked closely with the CA Dept. of Justice’s Missing & Unidentified Person Section (MUPS), in an effort to compare the decedent to known missing persons. All potential matches were ruled out during this time period.

On 02/02/2016, following several days of additional efforts to extract a useable fingerprint from the decedent, a readable fingerprint was obtained. The decedent was subsequently identified as Shawn Steven Hurlock, a 52-year-old male out of Stockton, CA. Mr. Hurlock had not been reported as missing. Authorities have escorted the subject off the Golden Gate Bridge twice in the past. At this time, investigators are working with authorities at the Golden Gate Bridge to review security footage on or near the bridge, to ascertain if this subject was seen in the area in the days prior to his remains being found.

A forensic autopsy was conducted on 01/21/2016; the cause and manner of death are under active investigation. A final cause and manner of death will be pended for results of toxicology testing. At this time, no further information will be released by the Coroner Division.
