The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating a fatal car collision in San Rafael that happened early this morning following a vehicle pursuit.
On March 28th, 2025, at approximately 0257 hours, a Deputy with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office on patrol attempted to stop a vehicle for driving recklessly in the area of Andersen Drive and Bellam Boulevard in San Rafael. The vehicle failed to yield to the Deputy’s emergency lights and sirens, and fled at a high rate of speed. The Deputy initiated a vehicle pursuit. At approximately 0259 hours, the vehicle collided into a tree. The driver, and sole occupant in the vehicle, was ejected as a result of the collision. The Deputy immediately requested a response from the San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD). Upon the arrival of SRFD, the driver was pronounced deceased at approximately 0312 hours.
Based on these factors, the Sheriff’s Office invoked the law enforcement employee-involved critical incident protocol and requested the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to conduct an independent investigation into the collision. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, Coroner Division, will handle the Coroner duties associated with the death.
The identity of the decedent is pending next of kin notification.
No further information will be released from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Media inquiries related to the independent investigation should be directed to CHP and media inquiries related to the identification of the decedent should be directed to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office at 707-565-3941.
