On Saturday February 19, 2022 at approximately 11:48 PM, a solo motor vehicle collision was reported to 9-1-1 having occurred on westbound Interstate 580 in between Main Street - San Quentin Village exit and prior to the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard exit. Reportedly the vehicle involved in the collision had been previously observed travelling across the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge in an erratic manner at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was discovered by other motorists with damage consistent with having been involved in collision with a fixed object and was unoccupied. At the time of this writing and which remains under investigation, it is not known if the vehicle was occupied by one or more persons and who was the operator of the vehicle. It is believed Mr. Gonzalez Vasquez, the registered owner the vehicle involved in the collision, was attempting to cross the highway after the crash and was struck by multiple vehicles travelling eastbound on Interstate 580 in close proximity to the crash scene. Regrettably the subject sustained catastrophic traumatic injuries as a result of the multiple vehicle strikes. Reportedly one or more vehicles travelling eastbound on Interstate 580, who struck the subject, failed to yield and remain at the scene.
His death was pronounced on the scene by First Responders without resuscitative aid provided. The subject’s identity was unknown at the time of the incident. Efforts to positively identify the subject were delayed due to him not having a California Driver’s license issued to him and no identification was present on his person. The subject was positively identified earlier today.
The decedent has been positively identified as:
Erick Omar GONZALEZ VASQUEZ, a 21-year-old male reportedly residing in Sunnyvale, CA. and from Guatemala.
A forensic post mortem examination with toxicology testing was completed earlier today. The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations being completed by the California Highway Patrol – Marin Office and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office - Coroner Division. No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation. Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the California Highway Patrol – Marin Office.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office and personnel of the Coroner Division offers our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gonzalez Vasquez.
Roger G. Fielding
Chief Deputy Coroner
