Marin County Jail Inmate dies while in custody

The San Rafael Police Department is investigating the in-custody death of an inmate housed at the Marin County Jail.

Around 8:35 PM on September 13th, 2021 a Deputy and a Nurse in a housing unit of the Marin County Jail were making rounds to give inmates medication when they located a male inmate slumped over in his cell. This inmate was the only inmate assigned to this cell. The Deputy and Nurse immediately started performing life saving measures and requested the San Rafael Fire Department respond to the Jail.

Despite all life saving measures, the inmate was pronounced deceased at 9:15 PM.

The Sheriff’s Office requested the San Rafael Police Department respond to handle the investigation into the death of the inmate. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Coroners Division responded to handle the Coroner Duties associated with the death.

No further information will be released from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and any media inquiries should be directed to San Rafael Police Lieutenant Dan Fink at 447@srpd.org
