FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 at approximately 4:51PM, two juveniles, both students
of Novato High School, were viciously attacked on a public trail within Open Space near
the end of Fairway Drive, Novato. Seventeen year old Edwin Josue Ramirez, was killed
at the scene of the attack while the other (unnamed) juvenile who had been both shot
and stabbed by his attackers, was able to escape and call 911.
During the past eight days, Sheriff’s investigators have been working an overwhelming
number of clues, tips and leads in pursuit of those responsible for this attack. In result,
the Sheriff’s Office working in concert with many of our allied agencies have conducted
three (3) high risk tactical operations where a total of three (3) suspects have been
arrested for their involvement in the deadly assault on Wednesday, May 25th, they are;
- Suspect #1. HENRIQUEZ, Jaun Carlos Martinez, HMJ, 10-18-1968
Arrested during execution of Search Warrant at 405 Rowland Boulevard, Novato on
Thursday, May 26th, 2016
- Suspect #2. GUEVARA, Edwin Oswaldo, HMJ, 6-20-1999
Arrested during execution of Search Warrant at 1049 Leafwood Drive, Novato on
Thursday, May 26th, 2016.
- Suspect #3 Machado-Rivera, Elmer Fernando, HMA, 6-11-1995
Arrested on Saturday May 28th, 2016 during course of investigative follow-up.
- Suspect #4. GUEVARA, Javier, HMA, 3-15-1997 (brother of suspect #2)
Suspect still WANTED for MURDER, Armed and Dangerous.
A fourth high-risk tactical operation was conducted earlier this morning pursuant to a
Search Warrant at 15 South Norfolk Street, San Mateo. This was conducted with the
assistance of the San Mateo Police Department and the San Mateo Regional Special
Response Team. No suspects were arrested and no details of any evidence, clues or
leads developed during the execution of the Warrant will be released at this time.
Please note this is still a very active and intense investigation, and at the same time it is
very intense and emotional to so many impacted by this tragic event. The Marin County
District Attorney’s Office has filed complaints against all four (4) of these suspects
including against suspect GUEVARA, Javier, who is now wanted on a $100,000
Felony Warrant issued for his arrest. The two suspects in custody charged for Murder
and Attempted Murder (Jaun Carlos Martinez Henriquez & Edwin Oswaldo GUEVARA)
will face direct filing charges in the Adult Court System, both will have special
circumstances alleged. Neither juvenile defendants will face the death penalty because
they were juveniles at the time of these offenses and under court decisions as well as
California statutory law the death penalty cannot be imposed.
