Novato Motor Vehicle Collision Fatality - Identity Released

The decedent has been positively identified as:

Mr. Matthew Patrick COSSEY, a 35-year-old male resident of Cotati, CA

Early Sunday morning, March 15, 2020 at approximately 5:40 A.M. it was reported to 9-1-1 a solo vehicle traffic collision with injuries occurred in the northbound direction of Highway 101 south of Nave Drive, Novato.  First Responders were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived shortly after to discover, a Chevrolet Pickup truck was located overturned on the right highway shoulder.   During the collision, the subject was ejected from the vehicle and sustained traumatic injuries.  The subject, who was determined to be the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was located unresponsive, unconscious and lifeless.  Sadly, his death was pronounced at the scene by paramedics.

Preliminary information learned during the scene investigation suggests the subject lost control of his vehicle in the inclement weather and was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the incident.

A forensic post mortem examination and toxicology testing has been scheduled for later this week.  The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigation being completed by the California Highway Patrol - Marin Office and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office - Coroner Division.  No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation.  Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the California Highway Patrol - Marin Office.
