On August 09, 2020 the Marin County Sheriff’s Office – Coroner Division was contacted by the Novato Police Department and requested to complete a death investigation at the Inn Marin, involving a male subject, who was discovered deceased inside his hotel room. The subject, who prior to incarceration was a Sonoma county resident, was sent to a Marin County hotel upon early release from San Quentin State Prison (SQSP) under the care of the California Department of Corrections Rehabilitation (CDCR) early release program called Project Hope due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
Inmates released under the Project Hope program from prison during the COVID-19 pandemic have been supported with free hotel accommodations through this voluntary initiative providing accommodations to people, who need to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19 exposure or positive status. Safe transportation and meal service also is provided
During the scene investigation, no overt signs of traumatic injury or untoward-suspicious circumstances were noted by investigators. During the subject’s examination, post mortem COVID-19 testing was completed. The subject was determined to be positive for COVID-19. It was noted that the subject was diagnosed with COVID-19 in June at SQSP and reportedly recovered prior to his release. At the time of this writing, the cause of death remains pending investigation and the receipt of additional toxicology testing.
