Sheriff Scardina announces swearing in of Undersheriff Sylvia Moir

Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina is proud to announce the hiring of our new Undersheriff, Sylvia Moir, who will be sworn in on September 6th, 2022 at 11:00am. Undersheriff Moir has three decades of law enforcement experience, most recently serving as the interim Chief of the Napa Police Department.

Sheriff Scardina commented, “We are extremely excited to bring Sylvia to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Her wealth of knowledge, experience, and dedication to public safety for over thirty years speaks for itself. Sylvia will be a tremendous asset to the Sheriff’s Office and the communities we serve.”

Undersheriff Moir is known for being calm in chaos and her enthusiasm for the profession. Before her time with Napa PD, Undersheriff Moir served as the Chief of Police in Tempe, Arizona from 2016-2020, leading the department through multiple crises and advancements, as well as the Chief for the El Cerrito Police Department from 2010-2016.  Undersheriff Moir spent most of her early career with the Sacramento Police Department where she served in every division of the department and was the Incident Commander on hundreds of planned and spontaneous events.

“I am excited to return to Northern California where my career began,” said Undersheriff Sylvia Moir. “The opportunity to serve the women and men of the organization and the Marin County community through modern-day policing is exciting and I am eager to get started.”

Undersheriff Moir was appointed by US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to the FirstNet Board and is the chair of the FirstNet Governance and Risk Committee.

Undersheriff Moir is in demand as a speaker and in 2019, she participated in TEDx SoMa’s Modern Campfire series, where she spoke on the complexity of modern-day policing and the importance of practicing mindfulness and developing resilience for enduring service. Undersheriff Moir is the co-host on the Hollow Bunny Leadership podcast with Chief Kristen Ziman (Ret.).   

A California native, Undersheriff Moir holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento; a Master of Arts in Organizational Management, and a Master of Science degree from the Naval Postgraduate School - Center for Homeland Defense and Security. She enjoys reading, hiking, running, and almost anything outside. She was excited to run the New York Marathon in November 2021, with the NYPD team and is looking forward to running the 2022 Chicago Marathon.
