Student Death at the Mark Day School, San Rafael

The decedent, a 7-year-old-male from Greenbrae, CA has been positively identified. Due to his age, his identity will not be disclosed by the Coroner Division.

On Thursday afternoon, December 19, 2019 at approximately 12:20 PM, it was reported to 9-1-1 an elementary school student on the playground of the Mark Day School property was struck by a rolling chain link fence gate, which for reasons unknown and remain under investigation, became dislodged from its mounting points and fell to the ground. The gate struck the student, rendering him unconscious and unresponsive. First Responders were immediately dispatched to the scene and discovered the student in cardiac arrest.  Aggressive resuscitative aid was provided by paramedics and the student was transported to an area hospital where additional resuscitative aid was continued to no avail.  Sadly and tragically, the student did not respond to treatment and his death was pronounced by the medical staff.

A forensic post mortem examination was completed earlier today. The cause and manner of death will be provided at the conclusion of the investigation being completed by the San Rafael Police Department and this office.  No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation.  Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the San Rafael Police Department.
