Accounting Technician

This is the highest technical/specialist level in the accounting support series.

This is the highest technical/specialist level in the accounting support series. Positions in this class require a definable body of knowledge and skill and/or have specific programmatic responsibility which are normally gained through a combination of technical education above the high school level and significant on-the-job experience. While responsibilities may vary, depending upon the department to which assigned, all positions are characterized by the performance of technical and complex accounting and financial support work, requiring the regular use of independent judgment and initiative. Lead direction of others is not a regular component of the job, although project or relief leadership may be required. This class is distinguished from the Accountant and Auditor class series in that the latter are professional-level classes, requiring the knowledge of accounting theory and broad practices and the ability to install and implement improved accounting systems and processes. Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to converse in person and over the telephone.

Examples of Duties (Illustrative Only)

Creates, maintains and reviews a variety of records and reports related to the collection of secured, unsecured and supplemental taxes; calculates penalties and secures the collection of delinquent taxes. Audits and verifies payroll information, including source data and automated reports; in a centralized setting, produces trial balances for salaries, benefits, deductions and various leave information.
Prepares and submits complex claims of programmatic expenditures for submission to various funding agencies for reimbursement; audits expenditures and allocates them to cost centers; estimates income, expenditures and reserves. Prepares daily, weekly, quarterly, annual and special reports related to the functional area to which assigned; develops automated methods of compiling data and generating standard reports, using spreadsheet and data base software.
Conducts and follows through on a variety of special projects, which may involve financial and accounting research and analysis, summarization of information and preparation of statistical and narrative reports. Provides information to the public, vendors, County staff and others, which requires the use of judgment and the explanation of policies, rules or procedures.
Uses a variety of standard office equipment, including a computer and various financial, spreadsheet and word processing software. May direct the work of other support staff on a project or relief basis.
