Legal Process Specialist

Technical/specialist level that performs a full range of work as a legal process assistant.

This is the technical/specialist level in this class series. In addition to performing the full range of work as a Legal Process Assistant, incumbents also provide technical or complex specialty services in one of the following ways: carrying a program through all phases with minimal professional oversight, such as administrative probation or community service; performing in one or more highly technical areas requiring a specialized knowledge of the legal system, such as acceptance or service of a wide variety of civil documents; performing all phases of the processing of warrants, including providing information to other criminal justice agencies; or serving as the relief position on multiple desks, including those assigned to the classes of Legal Process Specialist or Senior Legal Process Assistant on a permanent basis. Positions may be assigned to any of the following departments: District Attorney, Probation, Public Defender, Child Support Services or Sheriff, depending upon the organization of work within the department. This class is distinguished from Senior Legal Process Assistant in that the latter is the lead or assistant supervisory level in this class series. It is further distinguished from Legal Process Supervisor in that the latter is the first full supervisory level of this class series.

Examples Of Duties (Illustrative Only)

Requires a specialized base of technical knowledge, problem solving and the regular use of independent judgment. Following established guidelines, independently carries a specific program from beginning to end, such as victim restitution, community service, administrative probation, civil document processing and preparation, warrant processing and tracking and processing all fugitive and extradition cases.
Including assignments at the Legal Processing Specialist and Senior Legal Processing Assistant level. Reads, interprets and processes a wide variety of complex legal documents such as court orders, arrest and incident reports, citations, probation reports, judgments, criminal records, petitions, calendars, proofs of service, motions, garnishments, arrest warrants and other legal papers.
Using a computer system following established formats; accesses confidential statewide data files. Provides detailed and technical factual and legal process information to and receives information and a wide variety of documents from the public, attorneys, law enforcement agencies and others; explains fees and fines; assists the public in completing forms.
Related to the functions of the organizational unit to which assigned from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions. Reviews legal or court documents, arrest or incident records, probation reports, files and cases to identify inaccurate, inconsistent and unclear codes, dates and court assignments, and for completeness and compliance with a variety of laws and procedures; corrects situations or determines appropriate ways to resolve problems.
Compiles data from multiple sources to complete and process legal forms, documents and reports in accordance with established procedures.
May direct the work of staff on a project or day-to-day basis; may assist in the training of staff. May drive a personal or County motor vehicle in order to attend meetings and pick up or deliver supplies and materials.
