Legal Process Supervisor

This is the first full supervisory level in the legal processing class series.

This is the first full supervisory level in the legal processing class series. Incumbents oversee a unit of legal office support workers and provide policy and procedure interpretation and improvements to ensure consistent and effective service to the public, other departments and other agencies. In addition, incumbents perform complex and technical legal document processing work. Positions may be assigned to any of the following departments: District Attorney, Probation, Public Defender, Child Support Services, or Sheriff, depending upon the organization of work within the department. This class is distinguished from the classes of Court Division Manager and Sheriff’s Legal Process Manager in that the latter classes are mid-management, with responsibility for administration of a division through subordinate levels of supervision.

Examples Of Duties (Illustrative Only)

Trains staff in work procedures; answers questions and makes procedure and policy interpretations regarding work processes and the application of laws and regulations. Participates in selection decisions; recommends and administers discipline as required.
Also recommends procedural modifications and implements them after approval. Conducts a variety of special operational projects; prepares reports and makes recommendations as assigned; provides input into the budget process. Acts as liaison for the assigned unit with other departmental operational units, other County departments, other law enforcement and public agencies and the public; resolves issues and problems as they occur.
Verifies, codes, edits, enters and retrieves legal data and prepares reports using automated systems; accesses confidential statewide data files. Provides factual and legal process information to and receives information and documents from the public, attorneys, law enforcement agencies and others; explains fees and fines; assists the public in completing forms and in accessing the criminal justice system.
Related to the functions of the organizational unit to which assigned from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions, using a word processor or typewriter. Reviews legal or court documents, arrest or incident records, probation reports, files and cases to identify inaccurate, inconsistent and unclear codes, dates and court assignment and for completeness and compliance with a variety of laws and procedures; makes corrections and resolves problem situations.
Including coordinating the timely destruction of records in accordance with the County records retention schedule. Prepares reports related to the unit to which assigned. Compiles data from multiple sources to complete and process legal forms, documents and reports in accordance with established procedures; processes warrants and requests for information regarding criminal matters.
