Secretary: This is the journey level secretarial class responsible for relieving managers and administrators of routine and complicated clerical and administrative duties and tasks. Within established departmental policies and procedures, incumbents are expected to exercise considerable initiative and judgment in performing regular ongoing duties of the position and in accomplishing special assignments or projects with minimal instructions. Some positions may include training and functional supervision of subordinate clerical staff. Secretary is distinguished from the Senior Clerk Typist by its provision of secretarial and administrative support to managers, mid-managers or programs rather than performance of routine or technical clerical support work.
Sheriff’s Secretary: Acts as the Sheriff’s receptionist, screening visitors and telephone calls to determine the nature of business or inquiry, taking messages or referring matters to other staff as appropriate; responds to complaints regarding Sheriff’s staff; answers inquiries on a variety of subjects, conducts special studies on projects; acts as staff support to the Sheriff’s Parole Board by analyzing applications for parole to determine that requirements have been met; interprets and explains departmental procedures and policies; acts as liaison between the Sheriff and senior sworn officers; maintains personnel records and other confidential administrative files; researches and prepares investigative reports of a highly sensitive and confidential nature for internal affairs investigation; types confidential background investigations reports on County employees involved in sensitive positions; handles gun permit requests and prepares acceptance or rejection of notices and any subsequent court documents; attends departmental and community meetings, takes and transcribes notes and minutes; may act as community relations liaison by researching information, preparing information for press releases; composes memos, letters and reports; types correspondence, corrects grammar, punctuation and spelling; takes dictation via the phone from staff at outlying substation; has responsibility for Sheriff’s special vehicle registrations; operates a computer terminal or word processing equipment to input, access and to print data, reports, and project; prepares a variety of reports; schedules appointments for the Sheriff, Undersheriff, and senior staff members; may act in the absence of the Sheriff or Undersheriff in swearing in newly hired staff.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate noise.
