Sheriff’s Captain

This position is an inter-department promotion from the rank of Sheriff’s Lieutenant.

This class differs from Undersheriff in that the latter is the assistant department head appointed by the Sheriff and is exempt from the County Merit System. While Lieutenants act as commanders of courts, jail or investigation divisions or as officers in charge of a patrol district, Captains are responsible for the overall administration of the activities of more than one major division of the Sheriff’s Department.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear, stand and/or walk; use hands to finger coordination; handle, or operate mechanical objects, controls, or tools; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and/or near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Examples Of Duties (Illustrative Only)

Such as Bureau of Field Services, Bureau of Detention Services and Bureau of Administration and Support Services. Advises the Sheriff and Undersheriff on organization administration and in the formulation of policy.
Including the organization of the police and civilian staff, the training and assignment of personnel, the establishment of administrative controls and maintenance of records.
Prepares written and oral reports, conducts investigations and recommends action to bring matters to conclusion.
Develops or causes to be developed programs and methods to maximize the utilization of allocated funds, actively seeks grant money and other alternative funding sources for the Bureau.
Ensures collaboration with community groups on matters of mutual interest. Directs bureau and divisional activities in conformance with all associated laws, organizational rules and regulations and sound law enforcement practices and procedures.
