Sheriff’s Legal Process Manager

Responsible for all activities in the Sheriff’s Department related to the processing of legal documents.

Working under the direction of a Sheriff’s Captain, this single position, division-level, non-sworn management class has responsibility for all activities in the Sheriff’s Department related to the processing of legal documents, including criminal justice records, and/or civil process documents. The work involves scheduling for a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week operation, and the supervision, review and training of staff in work processes through supervisory and lead staff. Responsibilities also include division-level management responsibilities such as work planning, budgeting and establishing or modifying work policies and procedures. This class is distinguished from management levels within the sworn ranks of Sheriff’s personnel by its civilian status and its management of both civilian support and Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to this division.

Examples Of Duties (Illustrative Only)

Provides for the selection and training of staff; recommends and administers discipline as required; acts as mediator in complex personnel matters involving supervisory or line personnel and subordinates.
Oversees the preparation of and coordinates the service of civil process documents related to such actions as property and asset forfeiture and seizure, real and personal property sales, attachments, garnishments, earnings withholding orders, civil bench warrants, evictions and related law enforcement functions.
Maintains the confidentiality of such information and ensures that regulations regarding the release of such records are observed; interprets applicable laws and regulations to staff.
Acts as liaison between the Sheriff’s Department and other County departments and law enforcement agencies in matters related to areas of assignment; coordinates usage of and acts as liaison with other agencies and County departments regarding automated criminal justice information systems.
Monitors changes in laws and regulations and in technology related to the civil process, records and warrants functions; establishes, modifies and implements work policies and procedures. Prepares a variety of periodic and special reports related to areas of assignment; prepares correspondence, procedures and other written materials.
Maintains accurate records and files. Uses a variety of standard office equipment, including a personal computer and assignment-related computer systems.
