Supervising Communications Dispatcher

Perform all duties assigned to the subordinate classes of Communications Dispatcher I & II, but are distinguished by having supervisory responsibilities.

The Supervising Communications Dispatcher is a non-sworn position. Positions in this class perform all duties assigned to the immediately subordinate classes of Communications Dispatcher I & II, but are distinguished from the latter by having supervisory responsibilities. Supervision is received from the Communications Dispatch Manager and assistant managers who have the over-all management responsibility for the operation of the Communications Division. 

Mobility to work in a dispatch center and an office setting; dexterity to use varied communications equipment; sight to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the radio and on the telephone. Must be willing to work shift assignments and any hours of day or night, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required to operate a twenty-four hour facility.

Examples Of Duties

Instructs staff in work procedures; participates in selection and disciplinary procedures. Receives emergency calls, complaints and inquiries from the public, evaluates information to determine jurisdiction and equipment to be dispatched and dispatches police, fire, medical, and other public safety personnel and equipment.
Supervises the monitoring of several complex public safety radio frequencies and operates a variety of communications equipment, including transmitters and receivers, radio consoles, telephones, teletype, and computer systems and related equipment. Supervises and coordinates communications in support of mutual aid emergencies.
Determines the need for after-hour repair of communications equipment and calls out the appropriate technician. Assures adequate staffing for shifts; places calls for off-duty personnel needed for emergency service. Performs miscellaneous office support work related to dispatching. May act as communications training coordinator.
